The Truth Every Homeowner Should Know"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many people believe that solar panels can only be installed on flat roofs, but this simple misconception has discouraged many homeowners looking for an environmentally friendly source of energy. Most types of roofs can support a solar panel: flat roofs, sloped roofs, tiled roofs, and even metal or sheet metal. What matters is the amount of direct sunlight that reaches your roof and whether or not it is strong enough to hold the panels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We have seen tremendous advances in solar technology over the past few years. Today, installers create customized mounting systems for all types of roof pitches and slopes. When installing solar panels on sloping roofs, the installer will typically use special mounting brackets to accommodate each pitch angle. A sloping roof is often advantageous because the panels are already at an upward angle, allowing the panels to optimize their ability to collect sunlight. A southern-facing roof will help maximize solar energy production and minimize shading effects from trees and other buildings, regardless of pitch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Solar installations usually go on flat roofs as they provide more flexibility to adjust panel tilt angles with mounting frames, which increases energy output. However, flat roofs are not the only roofs that can be used. For pitched roofs (which slope), panels can be installed parallel to the roof surface with rail-based mounting systems. Tiled roofs use hook-based mounting systems that do not damage tile. Metal sheet roofs can often be installed easier than other types of roofs with clamp-based mounting systems (which don&#8217;t require heavy drilling). Each roof type has a unique installation technique to make sure the solar system is safe, waterproof and will last long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most significant things affecting whether or not a roof can accommodate a solar system include the condition of the roof, strength of the roof structure, area of roof where there are no shadows, and your electricity consumption. If your roof is older, reinforcement methods can, in some cases, be done to make it suitable for solar systems. Having a professional evaluate your site will help determine if all these factors are satisfactory for solar systems to be installed. Installers will assess the following before they can recommend the correct size of system: the load-bearing ability of the roof; if the sun hits the roof enough time during the day for enough energy to be captured; and if the area to run electrical wiring exists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Important Points to Understand:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Solar panels can be installed on flat, sloped, tiled, and metal roofs.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Roof direction and sunlight exposure matter more than roof shape.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Proper mounting structures prevent roof damage and leakage.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Structural strength is more important than whether the roof is flat.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Professional site survey determines solar feasibility accurately.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several people think that a level surface is necessary for their PV (photovoltaic) systems to work properly, when in fact they actually need to be angled slightly in order for them to operate at maximum efficiency. For example, when the solar panels are attached to a flat-roof building, mounting devices will create an angled mounting surface for the panels. As for sloped-roof buildings, many of these buildings will already have an angle (tilt) to them which will work well for solar panel mounting and performance. Oftentimes, roofs with an angle will also have a lower accumulation of dust on the panels (due to rain cleaning) and therefore better can produce energy than flat-roof buildings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For those homeowners who have a roof that is in an area with heavy rains and\/or wind; having a well-designed mounting bracket will be essential. These mounts will be built to withstand high wind gusts and will be made of corrosion-resistant materials to last a minimum of 25 years (lifetime of solar panels). During the installation of such a system, special attention should be given to make sure that all areas where water may leak into the structure are properly sealed. When professionally installed, solar electric systems do NOT cause any damage to roofs; in fact, they typically provide protection from direct sunlight and the elements that would otherwise affect the integrity of the roof surface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are many other options for solar installations than just flat roofs, including elevated solar support structures that are often used in car ports or solar arrays that are installed on open space on the ground. It is a misconception that flat roofs are the only way to go solar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The myth that only flat roofs can support solar panels is a false one. There is modern engineering for solar installations on most types of roofs; as long as your building\u2019s structure is strong enough and receives enough sunlight. To determine if your roof is suitable for solar, it\u2019s good to have a professional perform a site assessment for solar. Many types of buildings have been successfully converted to solar energy with the proper installation and design.
